Rosprirodnadzor and RAS will cooperate with gifted children

The Federal Service for Supervision of Environmental Management and the Russian Academy of Sciences have signed an agreement on cooperation in scientific, innovative, expert activities, including on environmental pollution with microplastics. Also, within the framework of the agreement, experts from Rosprirodnadzor and the Russian Academy of Sciences will act as mentors for talented participants of the International Children's and Youth Award "Ecology is everyone's business".

The agreement provides for cooperation between the parties in scientific, innovative, expert activities in the field of nature management, environmental protection, including issues of microplastic pollution and studying its impact on human health, limiting negative waste management (except for radioactive waste) and ecology. In particular, the parties intend to popularize the topic of environmental protection, environmental safety, scientific knowledge, achievements of science and technology, the development of scientific and technical creativity of the younger generation and the involvement of young people in scientific activities.

"I am glad that scientists are supporting our award. Now, with science, everything will become both more serious and more interesting, first of all, for the guys. Today we have signed an agreement with the Russian Academy of Sciences, which will allow us to help talented children at a different level, and they will receive both a theoretical basis for research and a scientific one. For their part, the experts of the service will not stand aside either. I instructed the territorial authorities to take a closer look at one of the participants who intends to conduct a study on the cleaning of Lake Baikal," explained the head of Rosprirodnadzor Svetlana Radionova.

She added that among the participants of the International Children's and Youth Award "Ecology is everyone's business" there are guys who are authors of serious scientific and practical ideas and developments.

"The N.N. Vorozhtsov Novosibirsk Institute of Organic Chemistry of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, which is the national coordination and regional center of the Russian Federation under the Stockholm Convention, has already shown interest in one of our talented participants," Svetlana Radionova noted.

The head of Rosprirodnadzor stressed that at the moment one of the participants is studying the possibility of using chlorella microalgae to purify the waters of Lake Baikal from blue-green algae, the activity of which leads to the phenomenon of "blooming" water, in which a large number of cyanotoxins are released that pose a danger to human health. The young researcher suggests dividing the lake into sectors and taking water samples before the experiment, then adding chlorella at the rate of 20 liters of microalgae per 1 hectare of water. Chlorella divides every 12 hours and, floating on the surface, will be able to effectively displace blue-green algae.

The International Children's and Youth Award "Ecology is everyone's business" was established by Rosprirodnadzor last spring and is designed to instill eco-habits in children, adolescents and their parents. The project was created for eco-education and encouragement of talented and gifted children who devote their work to the topic of conservation and protection of the environment.

In less than four months of this year, over 15,000 works from all regions of Russia and from 19 foreign countries have been submitted for the award. It is attended by children and teenagers aged 6 to 17 years in nine nominations: "Ecomir", "Ecoproject", "ESG-generation", "Ecomultfilm", "Ecorisunok", "Ecofocus", "Ecobloger", "Eco-family", "Eco-school".
